Dave Beazley has recently returned to New Zealand after 2 years traveling extensively through Asia, Europe and Indonesia. Dave spent 8 months immersed in his practice at an artists' retreat in the South of France, where he furthered his technical skills and kept on creating the eye catching little critters that endlessly run from the tips of his brushes and pens.
Through artful composition, delicate colour palettes and intriguing titles, Dave's paintings entice a viewer to look – the seemingly sinless paintings appear to hold a child-like narrative, with pastel hues and quirky characters – their initial effect is comforting. But when the unsuspecting viewer takes a step closer and looks deeper the contrasting undercurrent flowing through Beazley’s work greets them.
Eccentric subjects, sinister scenarios and a touch of gore all play a part in constructing a environment that Beazley leaves up to the viewer to interpret – a modern day social commentary or the chronicles of a wandering mind? Regardless they are a feast for the visual senses offering sweet then sour / sour then sweet.
Beazley brings to life his characters with computer animation, wood and fimo forms and life sized soft sculptures, all of which allow him to move seamlessly between two and three dimensional art.
Beazley enrolled in the Bachelor of Design degree at Unitec in Auckland – a tuition from which he graduated in 2006. Dave currently lives and works from his studio in Whangarei.
Qualifications: Bachelor of Design, majoring in Painting, Unitec institute of Technology, Auckland - 2006 Diploma in Cabinetmaking, Whangarei Polytechnic, Whangarei - 2000

Sarah Alexander - BVA/PGDip Sarah’s work combines traditional painterly techniques with hand-crafted sewn elements which come crashing together to reveal quirky yet intimate narratives of places within the mind. Her influences range from the natural landscapes of faraway places, to the films from Studio Ghibli, to the puppies she sees here and there, and this is only naming a few. It is these broad interests that keep her dreaming and creating places for strange creatures to reside. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT in 2008 and a Post Graduate Diploma the following year, Sarah now paints from her studio at the Corban Estate Arts Centre. She wishes she could be surrounded by cute, small animals on a daily basis, but has learned to make do with the ones she sews.

Interested in the darker aspects of life, Candy takes amusement in drawing the melancholy and the sinister. Often deriving ideas from dreams and poetry, these visualizations are then illustrated mostly in pencil, graphite and sometimes gouache. Candy has exhibited at galleries including Cross Street Studios and Artspace and more recently, a series of her drawings at The Franklin Arts Centre inside The New Zealand Steel Gallery. |

Fifi Cheung Artist, BFA Photography
My art practice is acknowledging the blurred boundaries between the physical object or the manipulated image. The endless pursuit of consumables and utopian ideas is so ambiguous, just like the act of capturing air. Through the journey of pursuit of air, I found beauty and satisfaction because I looked beyond its typical function.
My process is to eliminate an object's function by using a mixture of traditional formal techniques and non-traditional contemporary photographic treatments. I am fascinated by the understanding and relationship to found objects, by obscuring the original function I focused on the object as a sculpture. Inspired by the art of observation of ones will from an immediate action rather than a reaction, the pure instinct by intuition from personal memories, experiences that is true to the heart.
